Senior Patternmaker Job Description

Reports To:      Managing Director

Position objective

To interpret designs, translate them into patterns and put into production, overseeing the construction of samples through to fitting and final approval and ensuring that company quality standards are met. This includes detailed specification sheets for production and costing and technical input throughout the production process in conjunction with the production department.

Internal relationships

Responsible for:

·         Pattern Room Assistant.

·         Sample Machinists.

Functional relationships with:

·          Designers.

·          Production.

External relationships

·         CMT’s.

·         Outworkers.

·         Offshore producers.

·         Contract Cutters.

·         Lectra Contractor.

·         Other Contract Personnel.

Key tasks and expected results

1.     The senior patternmaker is responsible for interpreting designs and creating patterns.

            Expected results

  •          Proficient use of Lectra pattern design system to produce patterns that meet designer       specifications, including grading of all patterns.

2.     The senior pattern maker is responsible for marker making using the Lectra system.

            Expected results

·          Produce accurate markers for cutters, ensuring the most economical use of fabric and most efficient and practical layout for the cutters.

·          Liaise closely with cutters throughout the process and trouble shoot as problems arise, (e.g advise one-way fabric’s correct marker placement for production cutting).

3.     The senior pattern maker is responsible for the provision of yields, using the Lectra system.

 Expected results

·         Provide accurate yields for all styles for costing purposes and accurate estimates for production.

·         Provide updated information to the production manager if there are changes at any stage of production.


4.     The senior pattern maker is responsible for the creation of detailed specification sheets that are clear and easy to understand.

            Expected results

·          Work closely with the design and production departments, ensuring the accuracy of the specification sheets, attention to detail and that any special instructions are accurately recorded.

·          Specification sheets are made as clear as possible using diagrams, sketches and templates where appropriate to ensure accurate interpretation and to assist the production process.

5.     The senior pattern maker is responsible for overseeing the production and management of samples, ensuring that company quality standards and deadlines are met.

Expected results

·           Oversee construction of samples by machinists and CMT’s to company quality standards.

·          Ensure that garments are produced as specified by the designer, standardising construction where possible.

·          Time sheets are analysed to provide the production manager with accurate times for production runs.

·           Arrange fitting of sample garments, ensuring that all information required by the designer has been collated (shrinkage, wash tests, etc.) and that the quality of garments has been checked.

·          Identify and label 2 approved samples of each garment and ensure efficient archiving.

·          Correctly and clearly label all other samples and pass to distribution for sale.  Dud samples are to be carefully marked and removed.

·          First-offs are approved in conjunction with the production manager.

6.     The senior pattern maker is responsible for liaison with offshore producers and their New Zealand agents.

Expected results

·          Assist and advise production department with offshore production.

·          Provide highly detailed specifications, measurements and diagrams, clearly identifying any variances from samples.

·          Carefully track and approve from first prototype to approved production sample and shipping sample.

·          Ensure garments are produced to company quality standards and that deadlines are met.

7.     The senior pattern maker is responsible overseeing the wash testing of fabrics for both onshore and offshore production.

Expected results

·          Fabrics are tested to monitor shrinkage, colour fastness and general quality and suitability and ensure that the finished garment will meet designer specifications.

8.     The senior pattern maker is responsible for supervising the work done by the sample machinists and other subordinates as well as overseeing contract staff and outworkers.

            Expected results

·          The workroom is kept tidy and machines are maintained.

·          The senior patternmaker works closely with the production manager to solve problems as quickly as possible.

·          Workroom supplies are monitored and replenished when necessary.

·          Staff are motivated to perform their duties to the best of their ability.

·          Staff work as effective team members, ensuring that deadlines are met and company quality are observed.

·          Appropriate training and development is provided where necessary to improve performance.

·          Regular performance appraisals are carried out for permanent staff to provide feedback on work done and to motivate staff to continuously improve their performance.

·          Sufficient resource levels are maintained to cover peak workflow periods including using extra contractors when required.

9.     The senior pattern maker will undertake other duties as reasonably directed by the managing director from time-to-time.

            Expected results

·         All duties required are performed in the best interests of the company are done so in a competent and effective manner.
