Direct Reports:        Buyer’s Assistant


Relationship:           Merchandising team, Planning team, Creative/Marketing team, Retail team Distribution team, Support teams


Position Overview


As a member of the Merchandising Team, the Senior Buyer will ensure the Brand retains its philosophy and that this is maintained in all buying decisions.  Budget management is to be effective and contribute to the overall profitability of the Brand.  This function will also manage the entire Buyer responsibilities for the appropriate Categories, maintaining all buying decisions and managing budgets effectively and profitably.



Main Objectives of Position


The Senior Buyer will be responsible for: 



  • Identifying key seasonal trends relevant to the appropriate buyership and categories and supplying product that aligns to the Brand/Category and meeting the relevant customer profile. 
  • Managing the performance metrics of the agreed categories. 
  • Providing leadership and guidance to the Buyers to ensure that each brand within the buyership maintains its uniqueness and continues to trade at the optimum level. 
  • Providing leadership and development opportunities for team members. 
  • Leading, motivating and empowering team members to maximize the performance of the Brand. 
  • Reporting on Category successes and missed opportunities within Brand/Category and implementing improvements which contribute to the profitability of the Buyership. 
  • Present an update on relevant buyerships / categories performance metrics at weekly trade meeting. 
  • Building sound and lasting partnerships with strategic suppliers both Direct and local DDP suppliers.
  • Proactively conducting competitor analysis to ensure the Brands/Categories maintain their competitive advantage in both New Zealand and Australia. 
  • In conjunction with the Planning Team, present seasonal reviews – inclusive of all KPI performance indicators. 
  • Monitoring each style’s development from concept through to finished product. 
  • Working with the Planning Team to ensure spend is within set OTB limits. 
  • Maintaining targets set on percentage of direct business to maintain a minimum uplift in margin. 
  • Complete a monthly Merchandising Report for Category based on the set template of KPIs.
  • Provide relevant briefs within required timelines that enables the Creative/Marketing Team to action the catalogue and web shoot requirements. 
  • Travel nationally and internationally to meet the demands of the role. 
  • Managing the day-to-day allocation of tasks for Buyer support functions. 
  • Merchandising project work as directed by Merchandise Director. 
  • Working with the Planning Team to manage stock in season to meet required sell through. 
  • Focused product costing comparatives to maximise margins both domestically and offshore. 
  • Range presentations required for PR, retail, contact centre etc.
  • Participate in collaborative Buyership Brand Awareness across company to maximise range and Brand knowledge. 
  • Ensuring the Brand’s Group policies and best practices are adhered to. 
  • Any additional responsibilities related to the inherent requirements of the role or the needs of the company within the skills and capabilities of the Job Holder.

  • A minimum of five years’ Buying experience in the womens apparel industry
  • Collaborative management style
  • Strong strategic / conceptual thinking skills
  • Proven experience in apparel buying and successful result record
  • Extensive knowledge of garments, fabrications and fit
  • Experience working across multiple Brands / Categories
  • Proven experience in negotiation
  • Excelled in delivery to approved budgets
  • Proven problem solving ability with strong analytical and statistical ability
  • Excellent communication: verbal and written
  • Proven experience in managing a team
  • Ability to lead, build and provide motivation to your team members
  • Strong organisational skills and time management
  • Proven ability to build relationships with service providers and suppliers
